Set in 1755, the film explores the conflict between a poor soldier, Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen), who intends to build a home on the barren Jutland moorland, and a merciless landowner, Frederik De Schinkel, who has been trying to monopolize ownership of the area. When De Schinkel’s serf runs off with his wife and seeks refuge with Kahlen, the landowner does everything to drive Kahlen away and exact a cruel revenge. Kahlen takes up the unequal battle and risks both his life and his bond with the small, troubled family he has taken in. 2023 European Film Award: Best Actor.
