Best Actress Nominee: 2008 Academy Awards Director Tamara Jenkins (The Slums of Beverly Hills) returns, as both writer and director, of The Savages, a comic look at the fate of two grown siblings forced to re-examine their family lives and their career paths when they have to team up to care for their aging father. Laura Linney (Driving Lessons) plays Wendy Savage, an aspiring playwright suffering in temp jobs in New York City and courting perpetual dissatisfaction through an affair with a married neighbour. Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) plays Wendy’s brother Jon, a theatre arts professor living in Buffalo and slogging through an overdue book on Brecht. Neither sibling is fulfilled by their pursuits, and things quickly take a turn for the worse when they are called upon to arrange care for their ailing father Lenny Savage (Philip Bosco). The interplay between Linney and Hoffman is superb; they are perfectly matched in both their hard-edged comedic talents and their ability to reveal the pathos at the hearts of their characters’ lonely lives. “A perceptive and often strangely funny coming-of-middle-age story.” Hollywood Reporter |
