French director Michel Hazanavicius’ new film opens in 1927 when matinee idol George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is still top draw in silent epics. He resists the efforts of his studio chief (John Goodman) to try talkies. Stuck in a loveless marriage, George is sparked by a lovely bit player who hits it big in the sound era, while George’s career crumbles.

This sumptuous film, in black and white, pays homage to the days of Old Hollywood; without a single word uttered, the audience hangs onto every frame.
