In a small town in Normandy, an old shoe shiner, Marcel Marx, creates a temporary safe haven for an illegal African immigrant. Meanwhile Marx not only has the worry of an ill wife but also that of a canny police inspector breathing down his neck. Marx’s friends, eccentric characters all, have the same casual attitude towards authority that he does, offering assistance to whomever when they need it.

Excellent cinematography.
