In Contre Tout Esperance director Bernard Emond ( La Neuvaine ) once again conveys the fragility of life with subtlety and grace. Life is crashing down around Rejeanne Poulin (Guylaine Tremblay). Her tedious job as a directory assistance operator has been downsized due to corporate restructuring; her husband Gilles (Guy Jodoin) is slowly recovering from a debilitating stroke; and now she finds herself sitting in a police interrogation room. The overwhelming shock of what has happened keeps her from answering any questions, her silence more poignant than anything words could convey. This is not how it was meant to be. Emond's compassion for his characters is matched by the honesty of the storytelling; he allows raw emotion to fill the screen. His measured, assured approach gives the impression of life unfolding, of blunt reality with all of its poetic potential for tragedy. “… a deeply affecting drama about the knife's edge on which so many of us live.” The Globe and Mail |
