Continental, un Film Sans Fusil |
|
Best Canadian First Feature: Toronto International Film Festival 2007 Continental: Un Film Sans Fusil , Lefleur's directorial debut, is distinguished by its humour and its poignancy. In this portrait of loneliness and uneasy redemptions, Lafleur externalizes the humanity in us all, showing it to be funny, flawed and brave. The disappearance of a businessman triggers unexpected relationships among four solitary characters searching for companionship. A pretty receptionist at a sparsely populated hotel begins to pursue an insurance salesman guest who has recently been hired to replace the missing businessman. As they stumble toward a connection, we return to the painfully comic ambivalence of the businessman's abandoned wife, who throws out his belongings—only to chase down the garbage truck to get them back. With incisive humour and compassion, Lafleur explores the ways our desires make us vulnerable. As the film's characters search for connection, they have to take what they can get. Somehow, it is enough. “ Pitch-perfect, the cinematographer's lens is deft at capturing the mystery at the heart of banality .” Variety
